概要

打席あたりの総合的な打撃貢献度を表す指標。数値が高いほど、打席あたりでチームの得点増に貢献する打撃をしている打者だと評価することができる。出塁率長打率の和によって簡単に求めることができ、しかも得点との相関関係が非常に強いことからセイバーメトリクスでは重用される。平均は.730前後。

OPS=出塁率+長打率

背景

出塁率は四球も含めた出塁を評価する指標であるが、長打を多く打つ打者を区別しない。逆に長打率は長打に重みをかけて評価する指標であるが、四球による出塁を考慮しない。両者を足し合わせることにより、四死球を含む出塁全体を考慮した上で得点への影響が大きい長打に重みをかけて評価する適切な指標とすることができる。それがOPSである。

公式記録である出塁率と長打率を足すだけで極めて簡単に求めることができ、得点との相関関係も非常に強いことから、セイバーメトリクスの世界のみならず一般的なスポーツメディアにおいても普及している指標である。

具体的には、2008~2017年のNPBでは、試合あたり平均得点との相関の強さを表す決定係数は打率が0.68であるのに対してOPSは0.92となっており、チームの得点の多さのおよそ9割以上をOPSの高低で説明できることとなる。

OPSの計算式で得点をうまく説明できる理由としては「出塁率は四死球:単打:二塁打:三塁打:本塁打を1:1:1:1:1の比率で評価し、長打率はそれぞれ0:1:2:3:4で評価する。両者を足し合わせることで1:2:3:4:5の比重で評価されることになり、得点への貢献度に沿った形で加重がなされるようになるからOPSは得点と強く相関する」といった説明がなされる場合が多い。

実際のところ、開発者であるピート・パーマーはOPSをLWTSの簡易版と位置付けており、得点期待値に基づく加重と完全に一致するわけではないが手軽に近似することができる簡易的な指標といえる。LWTSとの比較では、OPSはやや長打を過大評価する傾向にある。

近年では、OPSと同じように打席あたりの生産性を評価する指標として、LWTSをレートスタッツにした指標である。wOBAが用いられる局面が増えている。OPSは長打を過大評価するため、wOBAの方がより正確に打者の得点への影響を評価することができる。
